The British have landed….

On Saturday we went as a family to the annual gathering of British expats in the area. The ‘British Birds’ meet up monthly to drink hot tea, eat biscuits and tell each other where in the USA you can find Digestives, Birds custard powder, Tetley tea and other British delicacies. Once a year they have a Cook Out for the whole family and play games including wheelbarrow races and the egg and spoon.
It was nice to meet some people who really understand the complexities of moving your family halfway across the world into a foreign culture, and of course to hear familiar accents. I’m looking forward to getting to know some of them and to find out what their plans are for Guy Fawkes night!

Here’s the boys doing the wheelbarrow race:

  1. Oh that sounds like fun. πŸ™‚

  2. Does this mean wheelbarrow races are a British thing?? I’m shocked!

  3. Cath,

I have no idea! I’ll need to ask whether they do these kind of school sports things here.

  4. Oh, i took it that the wheelbarrow race was something quintessentially British that only expats would want to celebrate!

Maybe it is in fact a cross-culturally instinctive thing to do on family outings πŸ™‚
